Subject: Virtual Private servers

From: info@polyspiral.com

Hello, I was thinking about a Virtual Private server, Im thinking it would cost me less a year, but I just want to make sure I have my facts straight first.

When I register a domain does it still cost the same when its on a VPS?

Can I have as many mysql databases as I like

Can I have as many websites as I like

How good is the support, say I need someone on the phone to help me set up a mysql driven website can someone take me through that?

Also, I have 4 websites with Home packages that cost about £50 thats about £200 per year, so if the above answers are yes then a VPS would save me £100 per year, is that right?

many thanks in advance :)

Hi,

The price of a domain would be the same no matter what package you have with us.

The amount of websites and databases you can run on a VPS is limited by the amount of disk space you receive with the package.

We would provide general advice on how to create a website package, on your VPS, which includes FTP access and Databases.

If you are using the VPS to consolidate domains and websites then it may be best to ensure that the sites are working on the VPS before cancelling the separate hosting packages for the domains.

Does your VPS use plesc?

Update from Support Team

Date: 2010-01-05 17:27:01

Hi,

Our VPS servers come as the standard Windows Server 2008, Ubuntu 8.04 or Centos 5.3 installation. For Windows you would typically use remote desktop, for Linux there is SSH prompt or webmin/virtualmin. In theory you could add 3rd-party control panel software.

Thats great thanks,

The reason I ask is I have a client that has VPS on 1and1 but they wouldnt help me set up a website and I worked it out for myself on plesc, + they are more expensive, so I really might consider this.

Thanks for your help, your support on Daily is really great. If you guys ever need a testimonial feel free to ask :)

OK, can you use Polyspiral which is my company name, I’de rather not use my first, but feel free to use my surname Thoms.

On another note, I’ve just purchased VPS, how do I get to the Ubantu interface?

Thanks again

Update from Support Team

Date: 2010-01-06 11:36:07

Hi,

You could install the ubuntu desktop on the VPS, however, the interface is designed for desktop Pc’s and isn’t really practical for servers. Is there a particular reason you want to install the ubuntu desktop GUI?

Your VPS already includes ubuntu8.04 as the operating system, which can be accessed through SSH using the command prompt, however, unless you have knowledge of using SSH access with servers we’d recommend using the webmin interface to set-up and manage your server.

To access your VPS:

Visit https://xxxx in your browser. You will get a warning about the secure certificate. Confirm that you wish to proceed and enter the username root and the password xxxx

Alternatively…You can manage your Linux VPS by SSH.

To do this, use an SSH client such as puTTY to connect to xxx on port 22 and enter the username root and the password xxx

Thanks, that worked and I just realized I have that in the email, sorry.

Just one other question (im sure once i’ve done this once I wont have to ask again)

To Create Virtual Server do I need to use a domain i already have and if so will it stop that website from working in some way? or should I register a main domain name specifically for the admin of the VPS?

Do I need to do this for each website I create/

Sorry for the millions of questions

Update from Support Team

Date: 2010-01-06 12:43:04

Hi,

You don’t need a particular domain name for the server (unless you wanted to use your own nameservers). You can add any domain, even ones you control with other providers, however, until you point the domain to the IP address of the virtual server it won’t effect it’s current website at all. You will need to have access to the dns of the domain you want to use though.

The easiest way to do this is to have the domain with Daily on our nameservers and then use the manage DNS option in the Daily control panel to update its records to your own server.

Change the record for www and @ to xxx (For the website)

For email you’ll need to create a new A record for example mail.MyDomain.co.uk which also points to 195.234.10.77

Im trying to do the site for jimthoms.com to start with and the other websites I have I’ll do later.

I created a VS for jimthoms.com, Im trying to work out what the ftp host name is, I tried the ip address xxx , so I can upload files,

I’de like to biuld it temporarily and it seems to give me this address to view it: https://xxx :10000/virtual-server/link.cgi/xxx /http://www.jimthoms.com

Im sorry Im a bit lost here, it was easier on 1and1.

Please say if Im going about it the wrong way

many thanks

Hi,

You would need a virtual server for each domain name.

In your FTP program you should be able to enter any address which points to the IP address of the server as the hostname, or just use the IP address every time as you have already.

The address you quoted looked like a webmin preview link – once you have a virtual server for www.jimthoms.com with an A record pointed to xxx in the DNS settings, you should be able to view the pages uploaded to that virtual server using the domain name itself.

Thanks

So just for me to be clear, in order for me to be able to upload files in DreamWeaver I have to alter the A record for the domain to xxx , would affect the email and the live website? which is ok as long as I know that.

Many many thanks

Update from Support Team

Date: 2010-01-07 10:04:27

Hi,

The A record for www. and @ will only affect web traffic.

Mail is controlled by the MX record and any specific ‘mail’ A records, so this would be unaffected.

“If you are using the VPS to consolidate domains and websites then it may be best to ensure that the sites are working on the VPS before cancelling the separate hosting packages for the domains. ”

That kinda lead me to believe I could test before the site was live, is that possible?

Hi,

If you are connecting with Outlook to your VPS then you would put in your VPS server details (usually the IP) and not the pop.daily details.

You would only use the latter if your emails were still coming to mailboxes with Daily.

As your any emails not arriving, then have you had any bounced email messages with errors or anything in your server mail logs indicating where the problem may be?

Hi, thanks, I set it up as IMAP as it says that on the Virtualmin, but it cant seem to log onto incoming mail server, when I did a test I got this: Log onto incoming mail server (IMAP): General authentication failed. None of the authentication methods supported by your IMAP server (if any) are supported on this computer.

Send test e-mail message: The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

Update from Support Team

Date: 2010-01-12 12:00:01

Hi,

On the Daily nameservers it only had the IP address. This is fine for incoming paths (say, in mail clients), but not actual MX records or nameservers that need a host name – so we have changed this.

To clarify my colleagues previous response:

We can help with you setting up the ftp account, database and domain. Anything further this is down to you. We have some guides to assist you on http://www.daily.co.uk/support.

We actually have a more detailed breakdown of support services here: http://www.daily.co.uk/support?id=736

We can offer general advice and guidance in many cases (even though it is technically unsupported), however for running and configuring the server then it does fall under system administration and so is chargeable at our standard rate of 35 per hour.

If you did need help configuring your server or any specific tasks, then please let us know and we can advise what we can assist with.

If there was an actual hardware or network fault on the server then please let us know as these are investigated as a matter of urgency.

I have set up email on the server

I cannot make my email work on Outlook according to your “normal” support page on this. You have no specific info on how to set up email on outlook when its on a VPS I know I searched. In other words I have set my email up the way I have been told and its not working. Im telling you above all the things I have tried so I can help you to help me

So either your support doesn’t cover setting up VPS email on Outlook or there is something wrong with the server

Its kind of pointlessness for me to not have email, doesnt really help me to run a business does it?

If you cant help me with this I will be forced to 1and1, where I know setting up email does actually work on their vps becuase I set it up for a client before

Now, what settings do I need for outlook 2007 using a VPS?

Update from Support Team

Date: 2010-01-13 16:17:40

Hi,

As discussed on our Saleschat service, our engineers are logging into your server to investigate the faults reported that the email functionality is not working.

As mentioned before, general configuration and system administration is chargeable for our VPS solutions, however this charge will of course be waived if there is a specific fault on your VPS.

We shall update you within 24 hours when the testing is completed.

OK thats fine many and thanks, If log in and find a fault are you going to charge me?

And Im not sure you need to do that please, can you just tell me what outlook settings I need for Outlook 2007.

This isnt on your support pages for VPS, I really think it should be on there

Thanks again

Update from Support Team

Date: 2010-01-14 12:55:38

Hi,

Our administrators have conducted an investigation and found no faults with your server.

The test domain name of fastforwards.net was redirected to your server and our admins logged into Virtualmin and added a virtual server and mailbox for this domain.

Test emails were then sent to the aliases created which arrived in the server mailbox. The emails were then downloaded in both Outlook 2007 and Thunderbird.

The incoming and outgoing mail paths are 195.234.10.77

The username in this case is fastforwards

The password was the one specified in Virtualmin of xxx

The domain name fastforwards.net is on the daily nameservers and has the @ and www. A records resolving to xxx and the MX record resolving to @ with the host of fastforwards.net and a priority of 5, all set in the ‘Manage DNS’ secion of the Control Panel it is in.

Our system administrators have agreed to waive the charge for the diagnostic work on this occasion as it did not take a full hour, and they hope the above information provides the information you require.

Obviously though, the Outlook details you enter for other accounts would be dependant on what settings you enter into Virtualmin – however the fastforwards.net account has been left in place on your server. You can delete this if you want.

Thanks very much for the work you did and not charging me but this doesn’t really help.

You used the default mail alias that the Virtualmin creates ‘fastforwards’ not create a new one ‘info’ as I have with abherbz and then test those settings

I asked repeatedly for the settings for Outlook 2007 + I told you what I have tried, you could have gone into abherbz on my vps and told me since you have access and could have even charged me then to say that it was wrong if it was There is NOTHING about setting up email on the vps and in outlook on your support pages for VPS!

Im really sorry but I’m I’ve almost lost hope with Daily, and Im really considering transferring to 1and1 lets see a comparison:

1and1:

A. transfer domain to VPS in one hit

B. Setup website, database and email in one hit in Plesc, web mail also preconfigured. Done

C Drupal installed in one hit

E. website live and working

Daily

A. create VPS

B. create VPS for each domain

C. create database + website in VPS settings

D. create email address

E. Drupal – muck about with multiple php.ini’s

F. website live and working

G. Need email. Daily wont tell me how to sort email, ask repeatedly for email settings or support pages on this, Daily – No, dont give support on that

H. Daily threaten to charge for work, then go on server do what i’ve done already then dont actually do the crucial bit creating a non default email address then tell me everything is fine, be very nice and not charge.

I. client still got no email but got website. Client utterly lost!

Hi,

Sorry to hear you are leaving.

However, after much investigation our developers have found the problems with sending email is actually a bug in Virtualmin.

At present the only way to resolve the issue would be to log in as root via ssh and run the following commands:

usermod -a -G sasl postfix

/etc/init.d/saslauthd restart

/etc/init.d/postfix restart

Further information can be found on the following page:
